Best health apps for Apple Watch (October 2026)

The best health apps for Apple Watch, as of October 2026, start with Apple's own: Health, Sleep with a sleep score, Vitals, Training Load and, on Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, Readiness. For recovery and strain, Athlytic, Bevel and Svanu add daily scores on top of Apple Health data. For sleep, AutoSleep is a one-time purchase. For heart data, HeartWatch. For gentle, cycle-aware training, Gentler Streak.

Disclosure: Svanu is our app, and we include it in this list. All prices and features for other apps come from their own App Store pages or websites, checked in October 2026. Prices can change and may differ by country.

What makes a good health app for Apple Watch?

A good Apple Watch health app turns raw data from Apple Health into a decision you can act on, explains how it got there and treats your data carefully. Look for four things: clear scores with visible inputs, a personal baseline instead of population averages, trends over weeks, and a privacy label you are comfortable with. Price matters less than whether you will open it daily.

Criterion What to look for Why it matters
Explainability Score shows its inputs and what changed You can tell a real signal from noise
Personal baseline Compares you with your own recent data Population averages vary widely
Trends 7-day and 30-day views One night or one morning is noisy
Data sources Reads Apple Health; supports your devices Works with what you already wear
Privacy App Privacy label, on-device processing Health data is sensitive
Price model Free, subscription or one-time Total cost over 2 years

Criteria used for this guide.

Which Apple Watch health apps are best, at a glance?

The table compares the apps in this guide by main use, price model and privacy. Apple's built-in apps are free with the watch. Third-party apps either charge a one-time price (AutoSleep, HeartWatch), use a subscription with a free trial (Athlytic), or offer a free tier with a paid upgrade (Bevel, Gentler Streak, Svanu).

App Best for Price (US App Store, October 2026) Privacy, from the developer
Apple Health, Sleep, Vitals, Readiness Built-in basics, sleep score, readiness on newest models Free with Apple Watch Apple's own apps
Svanu Explainable recovery, sleep, strain, caffeine and cycle in one app Free core; Pro $2.99/month or $19.99/year, 7-day trial Scores computed on iPhone; no sign-up

Which built-in Apple Watch health apps do you already have?

Apple Watch already includes several strong health apps. Apple's compare page lists sleep tracking with a sleep score, the Vitals app, Cycle Tracking with wrist temperature on supported models, Training Load and heart notifications. On Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, a Readiness app gives a 0 to 10 readiness score from activity, overnight vitals and sleep.

Apple's Readiness support page explains the inputs: recent activity (active calories, workout effort ratings, training load), overnight vitals (heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, HRV and blood oxygen) and daytime heart rate, compared with your recent baseline, plus your recent sleep score. The baseline needs at least 7 nights of sleep with the watch in the past 49. Scores fall into four bands: Recover (0 to 1), Pace Yourself (2 to 4), Ready (5 to 7) and Go For It (8 to 10).

Built-in feature What it does Availability
Sleep score Scores each night from duration (50 points), bedtime consistency (30) and interruptions (20) Listed for current models on Apple's compare page
Vitals Overnight heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, sleep duration and, on most models, HRV Model-dependent
Training Load Tracks workout effort over time Listed for current models
Readiness 0 to 10 daily readiness score Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 only
Cycle Tracking Period predictions; wrist temperature for ovulation estimates on supported models Model-dependent

From Apple's compare page, Series 12 page and Readiness support page, October 2026.

If you have a Series 12 or Ultra 4, try the built-in apps for a few weeks before paying for anything. You may find a third-party app useful if you have an older watch, want to see exactly how a score is calculated, or want features Apple does not offer, such as caffeine timing or nutrition. For more on Apple's sleep feature, read Apple Watch sleep score and how to track sleep on Apple Watch.

What is the best recovery app for Apple Watch?

The best recovery apps for Apple Watch are Athlytic, Bevel and Svanu, plus Apple's own Readiness on Series 12 and Ultra 4. All of them compare your overnight heart rate variability (HRV) and resting heart rate with your own baseline. They differ in price, extra features and how much they explain each score.

Athlytic. Athlytic's App Store page describes a Recovery score from overnight HRV and resting heart rate against your personal baseline, an Exertion score from 0 to 10 with a daily Target Exertion range, workout suggestions, Athlytic Age, a Battery and Stress view, Target Sleep, a 24/7 health monitor and a journal that shows how habits like caffeine and alcohol relate to Recovery and Sleep. It needs an Apple Watch for most features. Price: $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year with 1 week free. The privacy label says Data Not Collected.

Bevel. Bevel's App Store page lists Recovery, Sleep, Strain, Stress and Nutrition scores, an Energy Bank, a Strength Builder with 700+ exercises, Biological Age, Health Records for lab results and a journal, plus Bevel Intelligence, an AI coach. Its website lists Apple Watch, Oura, Garmin and Amazfit as supported sources. The app is free, with Bevel Pro at $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year.

Svanu. Our recovery score compares this morning's HRV and resting heart rate with your own recent baseline, plus sleep. The baseline starts provisional after 3 nights and is full at 7. Every score shows its inputs and what moved it. Without a device that writes HRV, it uses resting heart rate and sleep; you can also take a 20 to 30 second camera HRV reading with your iPhone. The core is free; Pro is $2.99 a month or $19.99 a year.

For a deeper look at how these scores work, read Apple Watch recovery score: how to get one, and for a head-to-head, see Svanu vs Bevel vs Athlytic.

What is the best sleep app for Apple Watch?

Apple's built-in Sleep app now covers the basics: stages, a nightly sleep score and the factors behind it. AutoSleep is the strongest one-time-purchase alternative, with sleep ratings, a sleep bank, readiness, bedtime suggestions, a smart alarm on the watch and no subscription. Apps with sleep debt and bedtime planning, such as Athlytic and Svanu, are useful if you want guidance for tonight.

AutoSleep. The App Store page lists time asleep with a sleep bank balance, a sleep rating, sleep rings, Apple sleep stages integration, blood oxygen and respiration during sleep, wrist temperature, sleep consistency, "Tonight's Bedtime", readiness and a smart alarm. It costs $8.99 one time with no in-app purchases or subscriptions, and the privacy label says Data Not Collected.

Svanu sleep. Our sleep score runs from 0 to 100: duration 50%, stage quality 30% and bedtime consistency 20%. The sleep screen shows stages, sleep debt and tonight's bedtime, which works back from your own median wake time and sleep need and pays debt down over about a week, at most one extra hour per night. The sleep cycle alarm picks a wake moment inside your window closest to the predicted end of a 90-minute cycle. It is a prediction and does not read live sleep stages.

A sleep app is most useful when it helps you protect that time, not when it adds another number to worry about. For background on scoring, see what a sleep score measures.

What is the best heart health app for Apple Watch?

HeartWatch is a long-standing app focused on heart data. Its App Store page lists heart rate views for daytime, sedentary, sleeping, waking and workouts, trends for HRV, blood pressure, blood glucose and blood oxygen, ECG analysis, background heart rate alerts, journal notes and export. It costs $8.99 one time, and its label says Data Not Collected.

Apple's own heart features, including high and low heart rate notifications, irregular rhythm notifications and the ECG app on supported models, remain the core layer. Third-party apps add analysis and trends; they do not replace medical devices or a doctor. If an app or notification shows something unusual, or you have chest pain, fainting or palpitations, see a doctor. For HRV specifics, read Apple Watch HRV: how it is measured.

What is the best activity and training app for Apple Watch?

For training that adapts to your day, Gentler Streak and the strain features in Athlytic, Bevel and Svanu all work with Apple Watch workouts. Gentler Streak focuses on moving consistently rather than constantly, with readiness-based workout suggestions, cycle-aware activity guidance and an "overreaching" countdown during workouts.

Gentler Streak. The App Store page lists daily readiness from key vitals and sleep, full sleep analysis with 14-night trends, steps without step-goal pressure, cycle-phase support, a streak that allows rest days, 140+ activity types and an Apple Watch workout tracker with heart rate zones. It won a 2024 Apple Design Award for Social Impact, according to its listing. It is free to download, with Premium from $8.99 a month or $39.99 a year and lifetime options listed. The developer says health data stays on device via Apple HealthKit.

Svanu strain and load. Our strain score runs from 0 to 100 (active energy 45%, intensity-weighted workout load 35%, steps 20%). Your daily target band comes from today's recovery and your own recent strain history. Training load compares a 7-day and a 42-day exponentially weighted load. For the logic behind daily targets, see what is strain.

Which apps work with Apple Health and non-Apple devices?

All apps in this guide read from Apple Health, which acts as the shared database on your iPhone. That means data from other wearables can reach them, as long as the wearable's own app writes to Apple Health. Garmin, Oura and Withings, for example, can sync to Apple Health through their apps. What each third-party app does with that data varies.

App Uses Apple Watch data Uses data from other devices via Apple Health
Apple's built-in apps Yes Some features are Apple Watch only
Svanu Yes Yes; works with any device that writes to Apple Health, and useful on iPhone alone
Athlytic Yes Needs Apple Watch for most features, per its listing
Bevel Yes Website lists Oura, Garmin and Amazfit
AutoSleep, HeartWatch Yes Built around Apple Watch
Gentler Streak Yes Uses Apple HealthKit data

From each app's App Store page or website. Svanu from our fact sheet.

One detail matters when you mix devices: Apple Watch stores its overnight HRV in Apple Health as SDNN (iOS 27 adds an RMSSD type), while many other devices report RMSSD. The two are not directly comparable. A good app keeps them separate instead of mixing them in one baseline.

How do Apple Watch health apps handle privacy?

Privacy varies widely. Every App Store page shows an App Privacy label from the developer. In this list, Athlytic, AutoSleep and HeartWatch report Data Not Collected. Gentler Streak says health data stays on device. Bevel's label lists health and fitness data as collected but not linked to your identity, and lists identifiers that may be used for tracking.

Read the label before you install, and check whether an app needs an account. An app that computes scores on your iPhone keeps less of your health data on a server. If an app offers an AI coach, check where those requests go. Svanu computes all scores on the iPhone, has no health database on its server and needs no sign-up or email; the AI coach sends a request to an AI model through the app's server, which does not store health data.

How much do Apple Watch health apps cost over two years?

Over two years, one-time apps cost the least, and the full-featured subscriptions cost the most. AutoSleep and HeartWatch cost $8.99 each, one time. Athlytic costs $59.98 on the annual plan. Svanu Pro costs $39.98. Bevel Pro costs $199.98 on the annual plan. Apple's built-in apps and the free tiers cost nothing extra.

App 2-year cost on the cheapest listed plan
Apple's built-in apps $0
AutoSleep $8.99
HeartWatch $8.99
Svanu Pro $39.98
Athlytic $59.98
Gentler Streak Premium (yearly) $79.98
Bevel Pro $199.98

Calculated from US App Store prices, October 2026. Free tiers of Svanu, Bevel and Gentler Streak cost $0. Lifetime and family options not included.

How should you choose?

Pick based on the question you ask your watch most often. "Should I train hard today?" points to Readiness, Athlytic, Bevel or Svanu. "How did I sleep?" points to Apple Sleep or AutoSleep. "What is my heart doing?" points to HeartWatch. "How do I stay active without burning out?" points to Gentler Streak. Try one app at a time for two weeks.

A short decision guide:

  1. If you have Series 12 or Ultra 4, start with Readiness and the sleep score.
  2. If you want one app for recovery, sleep, strain, caffeine and cycle with every input shown, try Svanu.
  3. If you want an established recovery app with a Data Not Collected privacy label, try Athlytic.
  4. If you want nutrition, strength programming and an AI coach in one app, try Bevel.
  5. If you prefer to pay once, add AutoSleep for sleep or HeartWatch for heart data.
  6. If you want gentle, guilt-free activity guidance, try Gentler Streak.

If you are considering a separate tracker instead, read our guide to Whoop alternatives with no subscription.

How Svanu fits on Apple Watch

Svanu is an iPhone app with an Apple Watch app. It reads Apple Health and computes recovery, sleep, strain, stress and a daily check-in score on your iPhone. It adds caffeine timing, nutrition logging, an optional cycle view, illness signals compared with your own baseline, biological age and VO2max estimates, and an AI coach. It never diagnoses.

The core is free. Pro is $2.99 a month or $19.99 a year with a 7-day free trial; the free AI coach allows 5 messages a day and Pro allows 40. There is no sign-up, and you can export your data to CSV and JSON in one tap. See the full feature list on the Svanu home page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free health app for Apple Watch?

Start with Apple's own apps: Health, Sleep, Vitals, Cycle Tracking and Training Load come free with the watch, and Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 add a Readiness app. Among third-party apps, Bevel and Svanu have free tiers, and Gentler Streak is free to download with a paid Premium plan.

What is the best sleep app for Apple Watch?

Apple's Sleep app now gives a sleep score and stages for free. AutoSleep is a long-standing one-time-purchase option at $8.99 with sleep ratings, bedtime suggestions and a smart alarm. Choose an app that explains its score and shows trends, not only a single night.

Do I need a recovery app if my Apple Watch has Readiness?

Not necessarily. Apple's Readiness app is available on Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4. If you have an older watch, or want to see exactly which inputs moved your score, a third-party recovery app such as Athlytic, Bevel or Svanu fills that gap.

Which apps work with Apple Health?

All apps in this list read data from Apple Health, and most also write data back. That lets you combine data from different devices. Apple Health also accepts data from many non-Apple wearables through their own apps, such as Garmin, Oura and Withings.

Are Apple Watch health apps private?

It depends on the app. Check the App Privacy label on each App Store page. Athlytic, AutoSleep and HeartWatch list Data Not Collected, and Gentler Streak says health data stays on device. Bevel's label lists health and fitness data as collected but not linked to your identity.
